Denmark is the team that left the best impression in the “Boris Trajkovski” arena in the First round of the W17 EHF Euro Macedonia, after claiming the third big victory in as many matches. After Hungary and Slovakia, the Denmark players today dominated for 60 minutes in the Scandinavian derby against Norway, winning by an unbelieveble margin of 20 goals (37-17).
Norway scored the first goal of the match, but then the Denmark team took over the control, started scoring easy goas and taking a 5-1 lead after just seven minutes of play. The Norway players went on with making mistakes, missing easy shots, so after just ten minutes, they found themselves trailing 7-1. Two more mistakes from the Norway team provided the Danes easy goals from counter-attack, for a big 9-1 lead. The left wing of the Danish national team, Stougaard, continued with her goal-show, scoring a fine lob shot over the goalkeeper for a 10 goal lead (13-3 in the 18. minute).
The Norway coach took a timeout, but it didn’t change too much on the field, his team continued to play very bad, and the excellent Denmark team led by as many as 13 goals (18-5), before Norway scored twice in a row for a 18-7 result at the end of the first half.
Danes started the second half in the same rhytm, dominanting on both ends of the field. They scored two goals in less than 90 seconds and then continued to demonstrate theis dominance, leading by 18 goals before the middle of the second half (28-11). In the 46. minuta there was an interruption because of the power failure in the “Boris Trajkovski” Arena, but when the game continued Denmark scored three more goals for a 20 goal lead (31-11). The last ten minutes were just a routine for the Denmark team, who finished this round with another big victory (full time result 37-17) before the Main Round that starts on Tuesday.
Heine Eriksen (Denmark coach)
I don’t believe anyone expected such big victory. I really believed that this would be a match in which either team could win, but with no more than two goals. However, we played a great match and managed to get a big victory. We are playing great handball at the moment, but also we are aware that the toughest challenges are still ahead of us.
Kristina Joergensen (Denmark player)
We were preparing very well for this match and didn’t expect such a big victory. The defense was the key, because we created many easy goals from counter-attack. I hope that our good games will continue in the next games.
Norway coach – Vidgis Holmeset:
“We are fighters, we are a team that has a strong spirit and will give 100% on each game. We played a great team today that deserved the win, but we are still focused on our main goal. As I said before, we want to get to a place that will take us to the World Championship, so to do that, we will first need to win against teams like Netherlands and Portugal. We played Netherlands in the qualifiers for this Championship and won by 1 goal, so we can expect another tight match in the next round. I hope we will play as we know best and get to the wanted points”.
