The national team of France finished 7th at the W17 EHF Euro after beating Sweden in their last placement match with 30-25. French girls lead at the half-time (14-12) too, but inside the match it was all up and down for both teams.
Sweden was the team which started better, but France made a late finish in the first half taking the lead. That was not nearly enough to put the match under control because Swedish once again started strongly in the second period.
They had a 5-1 run in the first five minutes, so now they were in charge. They kept the game in the same pace for another 10 minutes until once more it was France’s turn.
After trailing 17-19, French scored 6 consecutive goals, took a 23-19 lead in the 52nd minute, and that was it. Sweden couldn’t find the way back, and the most they could do was avoiding a higher defeat.
Head coach of France, Christophe Caillabet:
“We are satisfied with this victory, and with this match, it is important to finish well. But I am a bit disappointed regarding the whole championship. Our first goal was the Main round and we accomplished that. Then I expected to be in the first five, I am sure that this team can do much better. I am sure that we will improve for the World championship and have even better result”
We showed that we are able to recover after the last defeat and to fight for the 7th place. We have a lot of things to improve, we will progress and I hope we will get better result at the World championship next year.
